Pot Roast Seasoning Mix

This simple blend of herbs, spices, and brown sugar makes a pot roast seasoning that will have everyone in your house waiting for dinner time! Pot roast seasoning is one of those things that you can so easily buy in prepackaged but is also soo easy and soo worth it to make your own. The packets you see at the grocery store usually contain usually contain enormous amounts of sodium, food coloring, msg, and who knows what else.

If you are like me, which you probably are since you are reading this post, you prefer to know what goes into the food you are feeding your family including something as simple as the seasoning you put on your pot roast. Thankfully, you can spend about 5 minutes making your own seasoning and be so much happier with the results!

Ingredients for Pot Roast Seasoning Mix

  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons dried minced onions
  • 1 teaspoon herbs de provence

Ingredient Notes

These portions made plenty enough seasoning for a 2 lb sirloin tip pot roast before we put it in the slow cooker. Adjust accordingly if your pot roast is smaller or larger.

We put 3 tablespoons butter into the slow cooker while it was preheating (yes, we preheated our slow cooker). We also seared the pot roast in 1 tablespoon of butter on a cast iron before putting it in the slow cooker. I didn’t include them in this recipe since they aren’t necessary to the rub but wanted to mention it since they do add to the flavor.

This makes a “wet rub”. You could leave off the apple cider vinegar to make a dry rub, but I don’t recommend it! The apple cider vinegar adds a tremendous amount of flavor. If you could smell through the computer screen, you would take my advice.

How To Make Your Own Pot Roast Seasoning Mix

This one is simple – add all the ingredients to a bowl, mix together, and rub onto your roast. No need to overcomplicate it!

Tips and Tricks

The seasoning is simple, but there are a few tricks to making the best pot roast in the slow cooker.

  • Wear gloves to avoid getting your hands dirty. This isn’t necessary but makes clean up easier.
  • Sear the roast in a tablespoon of butter on a cast iron skillet before adding it to the slow cooker – trust me, it’s worth it!
  • Preheat your slow cooker with 3 tablespoons butter while prepping and searing the roast. Slow cookers can take over an hour to get to full heat, and by preheating you can cut down on an hour or so cook time.
  • You can leave off the apple cider vinegar if you prefer a dry rub seasoning, but we have always felt like we rub provided the best flavors!

Making Pot Roast Seasoning in Bulk

If you would like to make a seasoning to store, simply mix all the dry seasonings together by leaving out the apple cider vinegar. You can keep this in your pantry for up to 6 months depending on when the individual spices that you added to the seasoning mix expire.
