Chicken Philly Cheesesteak

Philly cheesesteaks traditionally feature thinly sliced steak covered in melty cheese. While originally hailing from Philadelphia, they are beloved throughout the country as a perfect savory, meaty, cheesy sandwich!

I started swapping the steak for seasoned chicken simply because I often have chicken on hand. Philly cheesesteaks are usually prepared on a cast iron cooktop, griddle or cast iron pan. I love cooking my meat mixture in my cast iron dutch oven because it makes cleanup a breeze!

Ingredients for Chicken Philly Cheesesteaks

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup onion, sliced
  • 2 cups bell peppers, sliced
  • 1.5-2 lbs chicken breast or thighs, sliced into strips
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 12 slices of provolone cheese
  • 6 hoagie buns
  • 1 tbsp chives for garnish

How to Make Chicken Philly Cheesesteak

Preheat your butter and cast iron cooktop over medium heat.

Add the sliced onions and peppers to the cooking surface.

While the vegetables cook, season your chicken strips.

Add seasoned chicken to the cook surface and stir for 5-10 minutes or until the chicken is cooked-through.

While the chicken is cooking, toast the hoagie buns with provolone cheese in an air fryer or oven.

Once chicken is cooked, spoon 1/6 of the mixture into each toasted hoagie buns. Garnish with chives and serve.

Tips

Caramelize the Onions and Peppers – Take the time to caramelize your onions and peppers until they’re soft and slightly browned, adding sweetness and depth.

Use Meltable Cheese – Provolone and American cheese are classic choices for a Philly. Lay slices on the hot chicken in the pan, then cover briefly to get it perfectly melty.

Toast the Hoagie Buns – A light toasting in the oven or on a skillet keeps the bun from getting soggy and adds a nice crunch.

Season Well – A pinch of garlic powder, salt, and pepper on the chicken brings out great flavor. Finish with a dash of Worcestershire sauce for a hint of umami.

FAQs

How to easily shave chicken breasts?

To shave chicken breast for a Philly cheesesteak, start by partially freezing the chicken for about 15–20 minutes. This makes it firmer and easier to slice thinly. Once it’s slightly firm, use a sharp chef’s knife to cut the chicken breast against the grain into very thin slices, almost like deli meat. Slicing thinly ensures that the chicken cooks quickly and stays tender. You can also pound the slices lightly to make them even thinner, if desired.

What goes well with Chicken Philly Cheesesteak Sandwiches?

Chicken Philly cheesesteak sandwiches pair well with sides that complement their savory, cheesy flavors and add some variety in texture. Here are some great options:

  1. Sweet Potato Wedges – The crispy texture contrasts with the soft sandwich and adds a classic touch.
  2. Mac and Cheese – Mac and cheese makes an excellent side for chicken Philly cheesesteak sandwiches. The creamy, cheesy pasta complements the sandwich’s flavors while adding an extra level of indulgence to the meal.
