I love to whip these sweet potato wedges up in the air fryer as a quick side for sandwiches, burgers or steaks. They are ready in less than 25 minutes and perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside! The air fryer is great for cooking sweet potato wedges because it heats up quickly and cooks them efficiently.
My family loves all potatoes, but I try to substitute sweet potato fries for traditional fries when I cook at home. Sweet potatoes have a lovely earthy-sweet flavor that pairs well with meat (especially beef) and an incredible amount of nutrients. They are rich in all the things you want in a food you’re feeding your family: vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants!
Table of contents
Ingredients
- 1 lb sweet potatoes, cut into narrow wedges. I prefer small sweet potatoes for these wedges because they are much easier to properly cut into the right size/shape.
- 1 tbsp olive oil or coconut oil
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp paprika

How to make Air Fryer Sweet Potato Wedges
Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees F and place your baking sheet in the air fryer to preheat.
Clean and cut the sweet potatoes in half and then into wedges that are less than 1/2 inch thick. I peel off any eyes or blemishes.

Coat the sweet potatoes in oil and seasonings.
Remove the pan from the air fryer and place the wedges in the pan. Ensure none of the wedges are touching. The more space between the wedges, the crispier they will be!
Air fry for 15 minutes, flipping the wedges halfway through.

Tips for the Perfect Sweet Potato Wedges
- I like to heat the pan in the air fryer while it is preheating because it speeds up the cook time and gives you crispier sweet potato wedges.
- Avoid crowding the baking pan. If there are too many wedges in the air fryer at once, they tend to come out soft or soggy.
- Similarly, avoid cutting your wedges too thick. Thinner wedges tend to be crispier!
- This is a basic seasoning mix, but I recommend experimenting to find your favorite blend! Some combinations I love include:
- Taco seasoning mix
- Cinnamon
- Italian seasoning
- Garlic and parmesan
FAQs
Why are my sweet potatoes wedges not crispy?
They were likely cut too big. Make sure the wedges are all cut to about the same thickness. Thicker wedges may not get as crispy as thinner ones. Also, be careful not to overcrowd the air fryer basket, which allows hot air to circulate around each wedge properly, so you may need to cook them in batches.
Do you need to soak sweet potatoes before cooking?
You can! I usually don’t. Soaking sweet potatoes before cooking isn’t strictly necessary, but it can make a difference in texture, especially if you want crispier results.
Soaking sweet potatoes in cold water for about 30 minutes helps remove excess starch, which can make them more likely to crisp up when cooked. After soaking, it’s important to dry the sweet potatoes thoroughly to prevent steaming during cooking.
