Picture this, you are planning on making a yummy, healthy salmon dinner but 30 minutes before you’re ready to cook you realize you forgot to take your salmon out to thaw! With dinner fast-approaching, do you push mealtime back an hour to defrost your fish? Do you order out and cook the salmon tomorrow?
Neither! After running into this scenario too many times, I worked out a method to defrost and cook my frozen salmon in the air fryer in under 30 minutes! So I am very happy to share my process to cook frozen salmon in the air fryer! This process is quick, easy and will change how you view that frozen salmon in the freezer.
Ingredients for Air Fryer Salmon (Frozen)
- 1 lb frozen salmon fillets
- 1 tsp chili powder
- 1 tsp minced onions
- 2 tbsp melted butter (or olive oil)
How to Make Frozen Salmon in the Air Fryer
Coat the air fryer basket with a small amount of butter (or oil) and preheat the air fryer (on airfry setting) to 390 degrees F.
Once the air fryer is heated, place the frozen salmon into the basket and heat for 8 minutes.
Slide the salmon onto a plate and season with the butter and spices. I like to mix my butter (or oil) and seasonings in a dish while the salmon is cooking, but you can also coat the fillets with the melted butter and then sprinkle the seasonings on top!
Return the salmon to the air fryer and finish cooking for another 7-10 minutes. This final cooking time is heavily dependent on the thickness of your salmon fillets! Most salmon is ready within 15-20 minutes!
Tips to Perfectly Cook Frozen Salmon in the Air Fryer
- The thicker your salmon fillets are, the longer the first cook phase (defrost) will take! 8 minutes almost always works for the salmon we buy, but you may need to increase it if you have very thick portions of fish.
- If you are having trouble with a undercooked center and too-crispy edges, I recommend decreasing the heat to 375 degrees F and defrosting for 10 minutes, followed by 8-10 minutes of cooking with seasoning. You can also cut your fillets in half which really helps with heat distribution.
- Chili powder and onion are my go-to salmon seasonings, but I also love a combination of dill, garlic powder and sliced lemons added mid-way through cooking! Be creative with your seasonings and let me know what your favorite is!
